Having female friends is a really good start! I meet lots of guys in college, maybe you could take some classes! Something like Psychology or Sociology that involves class discussion so you will have something to talk about which you already have in common... I get nervous when guys from class talk to me, too, but talking about the class, which I'm already interested in, helps because I'm focused on the subject, not my nervousness.
There must have been some study done recently, because I've noticed all my classes include some form of group work at least once a week, so you'd be interacting with female students, not just staring at a teacher. Taking a college class also gives you a better chance of meeting someone who isn't talking to you to eventually steal all your money, as some of the men here have experienced. Women in college are more likely to become earners on their own, not just waiting for some guy to pay for everything.
I know this is going to sound corny, but try to just be honest, you never know when the cute chick you pick up just for fun turns out to be the love of your life and you have to explain the lies you told to get there. If being honest gets you instant dismissal, why do you want a woman who isn't interested in who you really are anyway? I can almost guarantee that woman will end up hurting you.
